OK. I don’t write reviews. But I figured that, in the confusing, sometimes scam-ridden, world of mattresses, folks need to know about this one. 10″ memory foam Foamex twin mattress. Here’s the short version: product is exactly what it claims to be; it’s firm but not excessively so; it’s indistinguishable from the Tempurpedic Cloud; cost 1/4 of same; delivered in 4 days from Amazon with free shipping; wrapped in 4 layers of plastic, squashed to a fraction of it’s open size; completely restored and 95% “de-odored” in 24 hours; slept on it the next night, about 36 hours after opening. Loved it. Couldn’t be happier. Now, here’s the long version: When I was a kid I had an ordinary foam mattress. I don’t know whatever happened to it but I was left with the memory that I had really liked it. Because those things had been made with chlorofluorocarbons, they quit making them for many years and I could never find another one. Then a few years ago I started hearing about this “NASA-Developed” “space-age” visco-elastic stuff from Tempurpedic. Sounded like a lot of hype. Sent for a sample and information and, wow!, did THAT ever open the flood gates! Shades of AOL! I started receiving snail mail at least once per week and emails daily. Not the kind of marketing behavior that motivated me to buy ANYTHING from them! But I was, nevertheless, interested in the idea since I had liked the foam bed that I had so many years ago. So, about 6 months ago when it was time to replace our 10 year old conventional bed, I started doing a little bit more in-depth research: web, magazines, visiting mattress stores (including the trendy boutique Tempurpedic stores in malls), mattress stores, warehouses, everything, for 6 months. Here’s what I found: Tempurpedic is the original, and, as such, sets the standard. Tempurpedic is absurdly overpriced and simply will not negotiate on price. If you don’t care about price, you won’t go wrong with them. Up to nearly 3 grand for a twin mattress (box foundation extra)! Wow again. (In all fairness, their “original” twin is down to 0) But I really did like the beds. I came to learn that mattresses have among the highest margins of most any home product. Approximately 60% or more. What that means is that for a bed that costs, for example, ,000, it wholesaled for only 0, giving a 0 profit. Ever been to one of those little boutique mattress stores in a mall and wondered how they could possibly stay in business when only two or three folks per hour drift in and maybe only one of them actually buy? Well, there you go. At that rate, the store could make over ,000 per 14 hour day with only a single sale per hour! Now you know why they’re always on sale. Always! Found that most major manufacturers are now offering some version of a memory-foam bed. I also found that the mattress manufacturers will assign different names for their “warehouse” buyers for the same product to prevent accurate cost comparison. Really gets to be a problem. Discovered that there are only a handful of American manufacturers of the memory foam. Foamex is one. Many cheaper mattresses are manufactured in China and their recent manufacturing track history in general has been spotty at best. So look for American made. No guarantee, but the odds are better. The original Tempurpedic was a “slow-return” foam that took a couple of seconds to reform after pressure release, leaving “pockets” behind that you had to kind of climb up out of. Also, some had complained that they retained too much heat. They (or someone) came up with a “fast-return” foam with much better ventilation that they call the “Cloud,” or “TempurCloud.” A real improvement. And that’s what you’re getting with this Foamex mattress: 3 inches worth of fast-return memory-foam over a 7″, relatively firm, conventional foam substrate (make no mistake, this “stacking” of memory foam over conventional foam is exactly what Tempurpedic, and everyone else, does – there are no 10″ memory foam beds where all 10″ are memory foam). And it’s indistinguishable from the Tempurpedic Cloud,” which is now their best seller. About ,800 for a “TempurCloud” twin (11″) mattress vs. 5 for the Foamex twin (10″) mattress from Amazon, with free shipping from both. I have no idea if Foamex is the foam provider for Tempurpedic but it wouldn’t surprise me. The bottom line here is your backside won’t be able to tell the difference, but your wallet sure will. Oh yeah, about “foundations,” what used to be “box-springs.” These things are not your grandmother’s actual boxes with real springs in them. They are now empty boxes, period. A sheet of plywood would do the same thing. Go for cheap (provided it’s not so cheap that it’ll collapse when you jump on it) and for the height (thickness) that you need to put the bed surface where you want it. In most cases, buying a cheap box from a discounter will be less than the one you’ll buy with a “matched” set. Just check and be sure. The bottom line here is that there’s no magic to a “box-spring” “foundation.” It’s a box. Period. (And in case you’re wondering, my wife doesn’t like the foam – it’s really a love it or hate it kind of thing – so we now each have twins pushed together to equal a king. Works for us. We sleep together but we each have the mattresses we each like best.). So,there you have it: 6 months of sometimes painful research packed into this excessively long review. Glad I won’t have to go through this process again for another 10 years. I need a nap.

I bought this mattress (queen size) about a month ago and I love it! It is incredibly comfortable for me and molds well to my body. It initially had a slight chemical smell, but it’s dissipated to the point where I don’t smell anything anymore. On my old mattress, I found any position other than on my stomach uncomfortable, but I’ve comfortably slept on my side and back with this one. My only complaint is that it retains heat more than normal mattresses, but that just means I don’t need to pull the covers up as much. The bamboo cover that came with the mattress is very nice and it fits perfectly. I’ve also slept on Tempur-Pedic mattresses and I think this is just as good at 30% of the price.

I did a lot of research on memory foam mattresses, including Tempur-Pedic mattresses starting at 00 for a queen. This one cost 1/4 that price and I think is just as good. Made in USA, Foamex is a leader in memory foam technology. There are a lot of cheaper-made Chinese imports out there, which I suspect are inferior.

Ships in a heavy vacuum packed plastic wrapping inside a large cardboard box. Once I unwrapped it, it seemed too small for my frame, but within 24 hours it filled the frame just right and expanded to dimensions listed on Amazon. I noticed only the slightest smell for the first day, which disappeared quickly. Cover is very good quality stretch fabric, with a zipper along the bottom for easy removal and cleaning.

This mattress rocks! I’ve noticed I don’t toss and turn as much as I did with my old inner spring mattress, and don’t wake up during the night. It’s a slight bit firmer than I thought it would be, but still totally comfortable.

Strongly recommend this product.

I really liked the TempurPedic beds when I tried them out at the store. But when I went online, I found many reviews about chemical odors that lasted for months plus uneven foam density. This bed got great reviews because of its eco-friendliness plus it costs thousands less than TempurPedic. After two weeks, I have to proclaim that it’s as good as the reviewers said. Firm but comfortable. Shrink-wrapped so it’s manageable to manuever into the house. It did have a foam smell for two days (instructions say the smell dissapates in 72 hours) but then it was fine. It expanded to fit the bed in less than a day. It’s amazing how little movement you can feel when your bedmate starts rolling around. You hear them moving but feel nothing! I agree that it’s slightly warmer than our previous bed but we just removed a blanket and were very comfortable. I put a mattress cover on it because removing and replacing the zipped cover looks like a chore. (The instructions prefer that you spot clean it.) The effect of the foam is unchanged by the mattress cover so that works great if you like additional protection for your bed. This is really worth the price if you want a foam bed. Super comfortable!

I really like this mattress. I was worried that it was too cheap to be any good but honestly I’ve purchased spring mattresses for not much more that needed to be replaced after 2 years so…

The only real downside to this mattress is the smell and that regular sheet sets are hard to fit. You should definitely purchase deep or extra-long. Otherwise, it really is like sleeping on a cloud, hard to get up sometimes!

Was VERY dubious of buying a mattress online, but alas this has been great

It did take almost a month for the smell to go away (but past reviews warned of this) and it took almost 3 weeks to “learn how to sleep on this” (hint: get rid of extra pillows) but it was worth it – I am sleeping extremely deeply and trips to the chiro have all but ceased

Compared to the exact same product for 00-00 at local stores, I’d buy it again in a second – The hardest thing was going from a queen sized mattress to a king!

I have had this mattress for a little over 2 months and am very happy with it

So far I have no complaints. I went from a water bed to this and it took a while to get used to because it is very firm, but now I can’t imagine being without it. It does take a few days for the smell of the foam to disappear but was never unbearable. For the money I don’t think you could go wrong.

It is quite heavy as delivered and vaccuum packed so make sure you have in the room you want it in before you cut the straps and take off the plastic wraping.

Read the Warranty information carefully it can be a bit misleading from what I can see there really is not much of any warranty so if it looks like it may have been damaged in shipping send it back immediatly before you open it or it could be costly for you to ship it back. READ the warranty carefully ALONG with their return policy.

I have had no problem with my mattress and would recommend it.

I have shopped a memory foam mattress both locally and online. The better deals online were too much of a roll of the dice. I suspect I trust Amazon feedback way too much but I felt better buying here.

The mattress itself feels like about all of the mattresses I tried out locally. Some of which cost 3 times what I paid for this one. I am a big guy so I needed firm and it appears to be firm enough. I have to say shipping was swift too. Just a few days. All praise and no complaints so far.

Edit** 1-25-2010

After a few nights I do have one complaint. This mattress gets too warm for comfort. I am trying to adjust but after a couple of hours of sleep, I get uncomfortably warm. So far, all cover ends up in the floor after a couple hours of sleep. It’s odd to go to sleep so comfortably and wake up so hot. It being winter now, I am concerned about how uncomfortable it will be in the spring/ summer. After reading some more on memory foam, this appears to be a common problem with some brands.

EDIT** 1-29-2010

So I have adjusted. Either the mattress isn’t as warm now or I have a tolerance for it. Either way, I am sleeping better than I have for years and I am very glad I bought the thing. The smell seems to be gone as well.

EDIT** 8-22-2010

I am slowly losing the original comfort I found in this mattress. I am seeing a mild pattern from my sleep position starting to form. The original softness is not persistent. It is becoming uncomfortably firm. In my opinion, this mattress is wearing prematurely. More in a few months.

At 9, this mattress is the best deal out there. I bought this after reading all 13 previous reviews and they are all exactly right. The 5.5lb density is pretty firm- I was afraid at first it would be TOO firm. We are both bigger people around the middle, and we both LOVED sleeping on it. So feeling how firm it is with your hand can be a bit mis-leading- it is SUPER comfortable. I sleep all over- on my sides, on my back, and now with this mattress I can even sleep on my stomach, which hasn’t been comfortable for me on a “regular” mattress since about high school. It’s 2 layers: 3 inches of the elastic memory foam (which is body-heat sensitive- the latex memory foam is not) and then 7″ of “High Resilience Polyurethane Base Foam.” It expanded to full size very quickly. We slept on it about 3 hours after opening it and the smell that everyone talks about wasn’t too bad. This morning the smell was totally gone, and it wasn’t that bad to begin with. The transfer of motion is almost totally gone as well. We used to sleep on a regular mattress with a memory foam topper, and I always thought that was “just as good.” Trust me, it’s NOT. We were always waking each other up. Now we can both move around and the other one doesn’t feel a thing, and therefore doesn’t wake up. Even our dogs getting on and off the bed all night didn’t wake me up. One thing to note is the warranty. It does not cover shipping costs, comfort (ie: if you don’t like how firm or soft it is, too bad), does not cover the zipper, and is voided if the mattress is at all stained, scuffed, otherwise damaged, and if it was not kept on a flat solid surface (ie putting it on a slatted base or regular box springs will void the warranty). If you can check out what density you like at a local store beforehand that would probably be best. We lucked out and happened to like the firmness without knowing beforehand how it would be, so we won’t be returning it anytime soon. Ours arrived on the first day of the shipping window, vacuum sealed, then wrapped in 3 layers of heavy plastic and tied with 4 straps. It was not damaged at all, and was really easy to un-wrap and lay out. We have absolutely no complaints. I’m recommending it to all our friends and anyone who reads this.

One last thing before I forget, as another review stated- memory foam and the base foam soak up spills like a crazy sponge. The reason we bought this was because our new dog peed on our old memory foam mattress pad, which was only 4 inches thick- and we just could NOT clean it. I tried EVERYTHING, and ended up basically SOAKING half the mattress pad in kids’n'pets cleaner, to no avail. It still smelled and was still stained. I can’t BEAR the thought of spilling anything on the new mattress (seriously, even a little tiny spill will be obnoxious), so we are getting a plastic cover (which also cuts down on dustmites, which I am highly allergic to), and I recommend to anyone who buys this or any other memory foam product to get a plastic cover for it. Otherwise one tiny spill can ruin your investment.

I found this mattress for my mother. The mattress is identical to more expensive memory foam beds and it is at a great price. These are simply the most comfortable type of beds that are sold. After purchasing it, I bought a memory foam topper for my own spring bed; memory foam is so much better than spring mattresses.

As far as the smell goes, the bed that we received had absolutely no smell whatsoever. Not even a faint odor.

After years on spring mattresses, individually wrapped coil mattresses, plush pillow tops, etc & never being totally satisfied, I decided to hop on the memory foam wagon. I was skeptical at first, so I researched the Foamex Company & found nothing but stellar reviews for their products. And they’re eco-friendly, such a big plus. After about a month of using this mattress, I just love it & am so happy with it. It’s incredibly comfortable & supportive (& affordable!). I cannot recommend this product enough & plan on buying more from the Foamex Company, eventually upgrading to a thicker mattress. Sleep well.

great price

good comfort

build quality is adaquate. its two foam pieces glued together and then wrapped in cheesecloth and glued again. whoever wrapped the cheesecloth didnt do a good job sealing it, there are still spots exposed.

you are given a cheap sheet that zips up and covers the bed. it has a plastic feel to it and is very cheaply made. now for the price, i still believe i got a good deal. i just need to go to the store and get some good sheets. the tag on the sheet says the foam bed is made in usa and the sheet is made in china.

the smell, what about the smell? mine hardly smelled at all and after one day, it pretty much subsided. now when you lay on it you can smell it but its faint. so either i lucked out or my nose isnt sensitive. i would recommend this to everyone.
